Audioquest nightowl review9/19/2023 While its size may have shrunk, Cobalt’s internals certainly haven’t been scrimped on. Measuring just 57mm long (2 ¼”), the svelte new model is 10% smaller than its siblings and its streamlined profile and immaculate deep blue finish is more reminiscent of a finely polished jewel than a USB dongle. Retailing for £269, some £200 and £120 more expensive than the £69 Black and £149 Red, Cobalt becomes the new flagship in the series and is AQ’s most expensive and ambitious Dragonfly to date. ![]() We now welcome the latest addition to the Dragonfly family, Cobalt. Both featured redesigned USB controllers that drew a fraction of the current and made them compatible with not just laptops but also tablets and smartphones and, with two prices of admission, brought high quality sound to an even wider audience. The original Dragonfly was supplanted in 2016 by two new models the even more affordable Dragonfly Black, and the more expensive but also more powerful Dragonfly Red. I hope this helps for those of you that are not yet decided what amp to buy. It’s hard to believe that it has been eight years since the release of Audioquest’s ingenious Dragonfly, the memory stick-sized USB DAC/preamp/headphone amp that provides a simple, effective and affordable solution to the problem of mediocre sound quality from computers. Both amps are transportable, not portable with C9 having an advantage here because it is lighter. The sound of WA8 is grander than C9 and the bass goes deeper and the soundstage and instrument separation is better on WA8 even though it is a bit warmer than Cayin C9 in tube and class A mode. ![]() I like the sound of WA8 more, plus I have the Cayin n8. Suffice to say that I am glad that I had the chance to try before buying it, I almost did it but I am happy that I was patient and they didn't have it in stock because I am relieved now that I don't have to buy it. I have the Woo Audio WA8 and today I had the chance to try the Cayin C9 and compare it with the WA8. Hi guys, I was really excited and interested in purchasing the Cayin C9 because of all the features that it comes with and the easy replaceable battery. Cayin C9 is a great product but I just like the WA8 more, plus I bought the upgrade tube for it and that enhances the sound even more I hope this helps for those of you that are not yet decided what amp to buy.
